The Legal Status of Life-Coaching in Israel
People have been contacting me expressing interest in the definition and official status of Life-Coaching in Israel, so here is an update as of December 2007:
The new Life-Coaching law is currently about to be submitted for its first reading in the Knesset. MK Stas Misezhnikov, Chairman of the Finance Committee, is spear-heading the process.
The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism will be in charge of the law.
The law establishes a Council which will oversee and regulate the profession of Life-Coaching in Israel, consisting of 9 members. The council will set criteria for, and supervise the registration of recognized Life-Coaches, be in charge of institutes of training and appoint a disciplinary committee.
As expected, the law will forbid practicing Life-Coaching without licensing and define who may call themselves as a Life-Coach.
Licensing will be afforded to those who have received certification from a recognized training program consisting of: at least 120 hours training time, undergoing one's personal Life-Coaching process and student-coaching at least 2 cases under professional supervision. As well, each Coach will sign a commitment to the ethical code and produce a "Teudat Yosher" (certificate of a clear record from the police).
The law also prescribes yearly in-service training of 20 hours to renew licensing and defines ethical issues such as client confidentially, loyalty, etc.
