NEW IN JERUSALEM: Philosophy Groups (in Hebrew)

Philosophy Reading Workshop, based on Alain de Botton book’s: The Consolations of Philosophy

6 meetings – Every other Friday, starting on March 6, 2009
More details below

In Ancient Greece and Rome, philosophers were seen as natural authorities on the most pressing questions. However, since then, the idea of finding wisdom from philosophy has come to seem bizarre and outdated. Enter a university department today and ask to study wisdom, and you will politely, but firmly, be shown the door. The Consolations of Philosophy, a bestseller, sets out to refute the notion that good philosophy isn’t irrelevant or just theoretical. Rather, it gathers together six great philosophers who were convinced of the power of philosophical insight to have a practical effect on our lives.

Socrates, Epicurus, Seneca, Montaigne, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche are read for the light their work can shine on certain great universal problems, among them, unpopularity, poverty, inadequacy, lovelessness and timidity. The book amounts to a guide to wisdom – as well as to the practical utility of philosophy.

Participants in the workshop will have the opportunity to share their feelings, experiences and thoughts regarding the topics discussed. As Israelis and Jews, we can also try to explore together how a certain way of thinking of a philosopher relates to our present lives.

The workshop is 6 biweekly (every 2 weeks) meetings on Fridays (11:00 – 14:00), starting on March 6, 2009.

Cost (including the book!): 570 NIS
