JobShuk Newsletter – Social Media in 2 Minutes

The new “Activity” section of JobShuk can be confusing for a lot of members, so I’m gonna break it down for you, and tackle the whole “Social Media/Twitter/Facebook for business” concept too.

The amount of information on the web is astounding, and people have learned to filter and absorb relevant data by quickly scanning vertically down a page.
The old-school model of web structured sites has grown stale.
A resume` or C.V. is similarly inefficient at demonstrating your knowledge and skills.
The core of modern social media is the mini-blog, where businesses and freelancers can regularly, shamelessly, shout out about something interesting they’re learning, doing, or discussing. It’s much easier and faster than writing a whole blog post, and each update is still recognized as an individual page for search engines, while being included in its entirety on an easy-to-scan index page. As long as your mini-blog is maintained by posting regular updates, you will gain exposure to new and exciting opportunities greater than your “Search Engine Optimized” website alone can provide. Even if you don’t get hundreds or thousands of subscribers/followers, searchers and casual browsers will inevitably stumble across your mini-blog, recognize your expertise, and turn to you when in need.

So why don’t you give it a try. Post an interesting update on http://JobShuk.com/activity/ and get an instant bump in your online exposure. (Select updates even go out to our thousands of viewers on Twitter and Facebook.)
We had a great response to our last batch of #projects, keep up the diligent work.

JobShuk Newsletter – Start This Month Right

Congratulations to all the long-time members. The “member since” description is no longer just a few weeks, but shows how long you’ve REALLY been a JobShuk participant. Feels like just yesterday, I’m sure, but go see how long you’ve been on-board. While you’re at it, update your profile, as we’ve added a few more fields that answer some of the most critical questions potential clients ask. And I’m sure your business has adapted a bit over time too, as any good business should.

In the top Grey bar, go to My Account -> Profile ->Edit Profile

What do you think about all the projects we’ve been posting? I’ll emphasise that these opportunities are real, and are NOT being seen by millions, so follow-up if something suits you, or share it/recommend a friend.

Optimizing High Traffic Massive Data Websites

The big dilemma in web development is that, on the one hand, web pages are expected to do more and more, while on the other hand, are expected to load instantaneously.  A web page that takes longer than 2 seconds to load is considered slow.  By 10 seconds many users give up, and 20 seconds load time is considered completely unusable.  On the other hand, with dynamic data, hundreds of data queries need to be performed to display a single web page.  When thousands of users are simultaneously accessing the page, the server access can get clogged up, increasing the server response time to render the page.

So many staff are now also working remotely and if that’s the case for your business make sure that you use some good screen monitoring software so that you can see what your staff are doing.

Client Side Optimization

What makes a page take time to be displayed? Loading time of additional files and script execution time.  To decrease initial script execution time, the display initial should be as independent as possible from script execution, and scripts should be reserved for event handling.  To decrease loading time of additional files, there are a few helpful methods.  First of all, each http request has its own overhead, so combine JavaScript and CSS files to make less http requests.  Image files may also be combined into one larger sprite file.  Then, use background position to determine which image to be displayed.  Additionally, since these files are generally static, they may be loaded faster by storing them on a CDN, so that the end user will download them from a distributed server, decreasing network time.

Database Optimization

On the server side, the biggest bottleneck is database access.  To optimize database response time, there are 2 types of optimizations – query optimization and server distribution.  To optimize the queries, the first thing is to make sure that all the necessary indexes are in place.  Every field that is used in a “WHERE”,  “JOIN”, or “ORDER BY” should be indexed.  This should eliminate the most sever inefficiencies.  After that, overhead may be further reduced by monitoring the server for queries that take more resources and use EXPLAIN to find the inefficiencies.  Server distribution is increasing the number of database servers, so that each server will not have a long queue of requests.  To do this, there should be a master server where are write command, such as “INSERT”, “UPDATE”, etc. are executed.  All changes should be replicated on the slave servers.  All read commands, such as “SELECT” should be performed on the slave servers.  To speed things up further when there is greater traffic, additional slave servers should be created, and the requests should be distributed across the slave servers.  The disadvantage of this is that the information queried could be a split-second out of date due to replication time.  It also creates another place where data retrieval can go wrong, when the replication fails.  Still, with large data and traffic, server distribution is absolutely needed for the web site to run at reasonable speed.

Caching

After all the queries are optimized, the website may take time because there are still a large number of queries being executed.  If the data is not constantly changing, there is no need for all the queries to be executed each time a page is loaded.  Instead, the content should be store in memcache.  Content will then load almost instantaneously.    Sometimes, the specific page content is dynamic, but much of the data is static.  Here, the page may still load quicker when the model caches the static data.  Just make sure to invalidate the memchaced content when the data is updated.

External Indexing

Still, if I want to search the website’s data, I need dynamic results that cannot always be cached.  How do I avoid increased database usage? Use and external data index, such as Sphinx to search the data.  You can have it return the ids of each record of the search results.  Once you have the ids, you just look up the records in memcache, and no direct database access is now required to display the search results.

From time to time, we respond quickly to support “How-to” requests by using JobShuk activities, and tagging them #HowTo. Click here to view those now.

JobShuk Newsletter – Welcome to our new site

Welcome to the new newsletter for the new JobShuk site. It’s been a busy month for me, launching the site and having a baby boy within a week, and I’m very excited about both. I know you’re busy too, so let me give you a quick run-down.

The site conversion went pretty smoothly – I had to update some profiles as they were showing up a bit bunched together. Also, some users reported that their ‘welcome’ e-mail didn’t include their new, temporary password. If this is the case, use the ‘Lost your password?’ page to retrieve it:
https://jobshuk.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword

The greatest change to our strategic model is the removal of Israel from the branding. Our logo stays the same, and our commitment to our original users and goal of connecting businesses in Israel with the world remains undeterred. We feel this move will only help us achieve that goal by encouraging more participation from businesses ‘abroad’.

We made many technical changes and will outline and assist you in using the new features in subsequent newsletters. The first major change we’ll highlight today is the ‘Sites’. We moved your blog posts into your own, customizable web site, running on the very popular open-source WordPress software, powering over 50 million sites on the web. The sites are personalized using Themes, for the look-and-feel, and Plugins, for advanced functionality, and we’ve done the research to present you with only the best ones for your business.

If you’re not yet familiar with WordPress, you should watch this 3-d slideshow I put together building a custom site:

or check out some WordPress video tutorials, like this one:

Come see how some JobShuk users have already modified the default template to make an attractive business portal:
Almost Eden by Tehillah Hessler https://jobshuk.com/thessler/

Another technical change is the open-text format for publishing a #project, unlike the confusing form fields on the old site. This format allows me (and others) to post quickly and start a thread for discussions, clarifications, and details.
These opportunities have been posted by your peers, and have not been exposed to millions of sub-par, non-native English speakers, so your assistance in matching the #project up with a suitable service provider is needed.
Here is a #project sampling from the past month:

How to create a feature-rich site with JobShuk (3-D Slideshow)

Why I Chose WordPress for my Site (and you should too!)

Laziness!JobShuk member @gidonariel requested full transparency about the whys and hows of the new site design. He posed the request well, because the answer is not a pretty one, from a “good business” perspective.

Laziness!

While at one point, I commited my money, time and complete attention to JobShuk, I have since moved on to more lucrative endeavors. But I’ve been trained to continue what I start, and I still believe that with the right initiative and momentum, the overall goals for the site can be achieved.

But the existing site was outdated, and lacked many of the features needed in the modern web for success and the success of the members using it. Sadly, I didn’t have the month to commit to development, nor the resources to maintain it for many years to come on my own.

And that’s the power of open-source software! Thousands of developers worldwide working on a single project serving millions of users. It’s really not a question of “should I participate in this project?” but “can this project deliver to me what I need at a minimal cost and minimal compromise?” What I mean is, there is so much functionality available, but some of it doesn’t look or act exactly how I might have expected it.
For example, the ability to have users register and set up their own site in an instant (WordPress MU, aka MultiSite), or the social network features (BuddyPress) have been available for a few years, but they lacked some of the maturity and compatibility that they have today. We couldn’t have used this project in 2007, but it’s perfect for 2011 and beyond.

As I said, my laziness, or my lack of resources, really pushed me to start using WordPress now, as it required little effort, relatively speaking, to set up, and the same to maintain into the future.

Hmm, a website that’s using cutting edge technology, easy to set up and maintain, requiring little time to manage, leaving me available to focus on what’s working best to earn money? Zvi, you say, why are you keeping this from us? But I’m not! In fact, I’ve done the research and configurations so that you can set up the perfect site for your business using the same technology I’m using. How perfect!

If you install your own WordPress software on a web host, you still need to run feature and security updates like nerc compliance software solutions, to acheive the security features you want for your business web site, and then configure all those technical details to make sure the site is running consistantly and quickly (or hire someone to mange it for you).
If you use WordPress.com, you’ll get the basic features for a blog and simple website, but won’t get all the great features handpicked for your online business or business profile website.

When you use JobShuk’s free account, you get instant access to an intimate business community social network (we’re all “friends” here), a business profile which is the perfect starting point for your business’ digital footprint, and a fully customizable WordPress site with all the bells and whistles you’ll need for your small business, including e-commerce, social networking integration, and mobile access for you and your site visitors. Our Pro account, for as little as $4.99/month, lets you customize a little more and compromise a little less, on things such as your own domain name (eg www.example.com), custom theme (or choose one of the thousands of free themes online), and more plugins (with more being added every month).

Thanks for the question @gidonariel! Feel free to contact me further with any questions.

We use non-identifying and aggregate information to better design our website and to share with users and other advertisers. For example, we may tell an advertiser that X number of individuals visited a certain area on our website, or that Y number of men and Z number of women filled out our registration form, but we would not disclose anything that could be used to identify those individuals.

Finally, we never use or share the personally identifiable information provided to us online in ways unrelated to the ones described above without also providing you an opportunity to opt-out or otherwise prohibit such unrelated uses.

    Our Commitment To Data Security

To prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure the correct use of information, we have put in place appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online.

    Our Commitment To Children’s Privacy:

Protecting the privacy of the very young is especially important. For that reason, we never collect or maintain information at our website from those we actually know are under 13, and no part of our website is structured to attract anyone under 13.

    How we use cookies

A cookie is a small file which asks permission to be placed on your computer’s hard drive. Once you agree, the file is added and the cookie helps analyse web traffic or lets you know when you visit a particular site. Cookies allow web applications to respond to you as an individual. The web application can tailor its operations to your needs, likes and dislikes by gathering and remembering information about your preferences.

We use traffic log cookies to identify which pages are being used. This helps us analyse data about web page traffic and improve our website in order to tailor it to customer needs. We only use this information for statistical analysis purposes and then the data is removed from the system.

Overall, cookies help us provide you with a better website, by enabling us to monitor which pages you find useful and which you do not. A cookie in no way gives us access to your computer or any information about you, other than the data you choose to share with us.

You can choose to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser setting to decline cookies if you prefer. This may prevent you from taking full advantage of the website.

You should exercise caution and look at the privacy statement applicable to the website in question.

How You Can Access Or Correct Your Information

You can correct factual errors in your personally identifiable information by sending us a request that credibly shows error.

To protect your privacy and security, we will also take reasonable steps to verify your identity before granting access or making corrections.

    About

    Jump to:

When JobShuk started in 2007, our mission was to help a niche market of businesses implement Internet technologies to connect with more clients and earn more money. JobShuk business profiles topped the search results when researching a business owner’s name or company name, offering a free and easy alternative to a corporate website.

With our relaunch in 2011, in addition to the profiles, JobShuk delivers a simple to use, yet comprehensive solution for small business owners worldwide to launch their Internet business or Internet presence for their offline business. The site grants free access to our social network, a fully functional and customizable website using the popular WordPress platform, and an e-commerce store. All of that ties in with the leading social networks for a complete selling, marketing, and networking solution for any small business.

The JobShuk free account provides most businesses with almost everything they need to get their business online and use common technologies to make more money. But sometimes that just aint enough for serious, power users like you!
