A true story. A graduate from a prestigious Business College applied to the General Manager of a top manufacturer in London for a job. Full of himself after graduating with honours, the young man started to throw around his credentials to the savvy manager of the company.<\/font><\/p>\n

"Do you want to start at the top and work your way to the bottom, or the other way round?" said the GM. <\/font><\/p>\n

Reminds me of another true story. A not-too-shy teenager in Australia once pursued a visiting American millionaire businessman to tell him he had a wonderful idea for a new business.<\/font><\/p>\n

"Can you please give me some money for a start-up?" asked the lad.<\/font><\/p>\n

"How much?" replied the American.<\/font><\/p>\n

"One million dollars."<\/font><\/p>\n

The businessman reached into his pocket and found a pair of shoelaces. He gave them to the young man.<\/font><\/p>\n

"Here’s the equivalent of $1 million. Sell them for a profit, then buy something with the money and continue to make profits each time you sell. Eventually, you’ll have enough money to start your business. Good luck."<\/font><\/p>\n

A good lesson for anybody in small business. Never think of an inverted pyramid when building a business. Start with a small success, not a big failure. Don’t over-invest, avoid over-stocking and learn how to build a database of loyal customers.<\/font><\/p>\n
