Prices for Web Development – how do you know you’re paying for value?

An interesting question arose in a recent discussion about web development rates, how do you know if you’re paying too much for services?

Here’s some background about the discussion: The person I spoke with works at a large company that has what was described as an excellent in house web development team. The person works directly with the developers and in general is pleased with the end result and service, however they wanted to know if there is a ‘standard’ way of measuring the quality of the programming and if the work being done at their company warrants the high fees. The person admitted that since they don’t have a technical background, they feel illequipped to asses the development work. It’s interesting to note that the person doesn’t feel this way about assessing the value of design work.

UI – The user’s experience is paramount

Are you finding your site’s bounce rate is high, you’re looking to increase your conversion rate (the percentage of sales generated from site visitors), wondering how online marketing strategies like SEO and social media can benefit your site?   Before investing in online marketing, take a moment and carefully consider the UI (user interface) of your site.

‘The user interface of your site??’ –  You may ask yourself, why is that important – all you want to do is generate as much traffic to your site as possible.   Think of it this way, if your site has a tough navigation system, has unclear elements, doesn’t entice users to go deeper into the site, or more importantly, users aren’t doing what you want them to do, then your marketing dollars are far less effective.

How to put together a plan for your website

One of the hardest things I’ve found for clients is how to begin.  A web designer can’t start work on a project without a plan.  A lot of the time, I work directly with the client, helping them to put this together.  It’s a good idea however for you to understand the process and come prepared when you first get in touch with a web professional.
