Historically, coaching has always been associated with the sports world.\u00a0 Today, however, coaching has taken on a new meaning.\u00a0 No longer restricted to sports, coaches are privately being hired for a variety of personal reasons.\u00a0 There are dating coaches, divorce coaches, writing coaches, voice coaches, lawyer coaches, executive coaches, and the list goes on.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How does private coaching differ from athletic coaching? In private coaching, the client sets the agenda & is considered \u201cking.\u201d \u00a0Furthermore, the client\/coach relationship takes the form of an \u201calliance\u201d or partnership to meet the client\u2019s needs.\u00a0 In this \u201calliance\u201d, the partners interact on a \u201clevel playing field\u201d – an authoritative relationship doesn\u2019t exist. Ideally, the coach guides, supports, and empowers the client to recognize and then solve his\/her problem(s) – poor motivation, low self-esteem, unsatisfactory job performance, etc.\u00a0 In other words, the coach doesn\u2019t provide answers or solve the client\u2019s problem(s).\u00a0 How does this work?\u00a0 Basically, the coach uses skillful powerful, creative, and opening questioning techniques, to stimulate the client\u2019s thought processes and to break away from his\/her problem \u201cmindsets.\u201d \u00a0If these questioning techniques are used effectively, the client recognizes the problem(s), and then sets up appropriate personal goals, satisfactorily achieving them within realistic set time frames.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are also other differences. \u00a0Whereas athletic coaching is done face-to-face, private coaching is also done over the phone, including long distance and by email.\u00a0 Athletic coaches are normally paid straight salaries. However, private coaches often negotiate their own fees. \u00a0In that regard, top-class business and\/or executive coaches often negotiate their own remunerations, based on fixed percentages of their clients\u2019 future profit margins.\u00a0 Consequently, compared to other private coaching areas, corporate coaching is the most lucrative, financially. <\/span><\/p>\n

How does private coaching differ from psychotherapy, mentoring, counseling, consulting, & tutoring? \u00a0Unlike professional therapists, teachers, & counselors, private coaches are not government regulated – they don\u2019t require licenses to practice their profession.\u00a0 Moreover, private coaches don\u2019t delve into clients\u2019 past lives trying to uncover reasons for present problems. \u00a0Some other notable differences, broken down by related disciplines, are as follows: \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Psychotherapy<\/span><\/u><\/i> – therapists normally work with poorly motivated and low self-esteem clients.\u00a0 In contrast, private coaches, especially, at the corporate level, work with high driving, functioning clients, who strive for more excellence.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Mentoring<\/span><\/u><\/i> – <\/span><\/i>mentors are normally older, wiser, with expertise in one area. Mentoring can also be tutoring someone. Basically, mentors bestow their knowledge to their clients or students. There are many tutors who have private tuition centers and conduct classes there. For example you can go to an A level chemistry tuition<\/a> if you need tutoring in chemistry or you can go several other tutors who are specialized in the area you want to gain more knowledge.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Counseling <\/span><\/u><\/i>– similar to a therapist\/client relationship, there is no \u201calliance.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0Instead, the counseling relationship is more hierarchical. \u00a0The counselor is \u201cboss\u201d, and normally solves the client\u2019s problem(s). <\/span><\/p>\n

Consulting<\/span><\/u><\/i> – consultants are hired for their fields of expertise to solve their clients\u2019 specific problems.\u00a0 So in this relationship there is no \u201clevel playing field\u201d, and the consultant, not the client, solves the client\u2019s problem(s). <\/span><\/p>\n

Tutoring<\/span><\/u><\/i> \u2013 again, there is no \u201clevel playing field\u201d – the tutor is \u201cboss.\u201d\u00a0 The client depends on the tutor to solve his\/her problem(s). \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are some of the key qualifications needed for successful private coaching? \u00a0A background in behavior modification psychology (including NLP) is one important tool. \u00a0To specialize in business and\/or executive coaching, an aspiring coach also needs to know the following: \u00a0the fundamentals of business management; how corporate organizations develop and function; and the principles of risk and crisis\/conflict management. \u00a0Moreover, having an MBA degree, supplemented by management experience in such areas as marketing, corporation finance, human resources, and\/or telecommunications, provide a further \u201ccompetitive edge.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Assuming an aspiring private coach\u2019s CV lists the above qualifications, his\/her glass is only half full.\u00a0 Just as crucial is his\/her mastery over certain key interpersonal skills. In that regard, recent studies have identified five critical interpersonal skills needed for successful private coaching. The first is the ability to develop client rapport. \u00a0Without client rapport, a partnership or \u201calliance\u201d can\u2019t be crafted. \u00a0Here, having a condescending nature is an important asset. Second, a coach needs to have deep listening abilities at multiple levels.\u00a0 Hearing what the client is not<\/u> saying is just as important as hearing what the client is saying. \u00a0Third, a coach needs powerful, creative, and opening questioning skills to effectively guide the client to solve his\/her own problem(s).\u00a0 Coming into play here is the coach\u2019s ability to adroitly manage the conversation, and not the client. \u00a0Fourth, a coach needs to know how to implement open and objective feedback skills to maintain an effective coach\/client \u201calliance.\u201d\u00a0 Praising the client as much as possible strengthens implementation of the feedback process. \u00a0And fifth, a keen sense of intuition is needed to ensure that the client is staying on track and exerting the maximum effort required to achieve his\/her goal(s).\u00a0 Here, a coach must be careful to trust his\/her intuition, but not to overly rely on it.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s today\u2019s job market picture look like for private coaches?\u00a0 Unfortunately, it\u2019s pretty bleak!\u00a0 Although the supply side is growing at an exponential rate, the demand remains stagnant. \u00a0Some of the major factors causing this supply\/demand imbalance are as follows: little, if any, governmental regulation (no coaching license requirements); a proliferation of \u00a0coaching courses and seminars, mostly short-term in length and without realistic enrollment requirements; high global unemployment rates; and the related scarcity of jobs for recent college graduates. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In conclusion, an aspiring private coach needs three critical tools to be effective: (a) expertise in a specific field\/occupation; (b) a working knowledge of the fundamentals of behavioral modification psychology; and (c) the innate personal skills to empower people to recognize and then to solve their own problems. If anyone of these skills is deficient or lacking, particularly, (b) or (c), pursuing a private coaching career isn\u2019t realistic.\u00a0 Perhaps a consulting, mentoring, or a counseling career would make a better choice.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
