Differently? Probably. Those with awesome ideas would probably be hesitant to go ahead with their ventures. Those offering financing to &#8216;venturists&#8217; would probably be much less inclined to invest. Your father, mother, sister, brother or the guy down the street who decided to take a chance to build a business might just end up in&#8230;<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><strong><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"1\">.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><strong><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"1\">.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"200\" width=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_phk8mz4MB_U\/TGtSVX7m07I\/AAAAAAAABNQ\/md-soWec7vg\/s200\/new_globe.jpg\" id=\"il_fi\" style=\"padding-bottom: 8px; padding-right: 8px; padding-top: 8px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><font face=\"Book Antiqua\" size=\"5\"><font size=\"6\">Debtors Prisons:<\/font> A Brief History:<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><strong><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"1\">.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><font face=\"book antiqua,palatino\" size=\"4\"><font size=\"5\">Perhaps due<\/font> to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Dickens\">Charles Dickens<\/a> and his many writings on debtors prisons <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Little_Dorrit\">(&quot;Little Dorrit&quot;<\/a> is among his finest), no other country has been as synonymous with debtors prisons as England.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><strong><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"1\">.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><font face=\"Book Antiqua\" size=\"4\">Until the late 19th Century in England, and in other European countries as well, if you owed money to creditors and were unable to pay, you would end up in prison. These prisons were old, decrepit and draconian. Rather than having cells, however, debtors prisons were huge, open, communal spaces. Men and women were housed together. Communities formed.&nbsp;Oftentimes, the family of the debtor, left destitute and homeless, came to live in the prison; they could come and go as they pleased. Kids were born in the prisons.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><strong><font face=\"Book Antiqua\" size=\"4\">.&nbsp;<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><font face=\"Book Antiqua\" size=\"4\">When those on land began to fill up, new ones were opened in the hulls of disused, rotting ships which were anchored offshore.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><strong><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"1\">.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><font face=\"Book Antiqua\" size=\"4\">Because the prisoner was charged a fee for being in prison (food, bed, legal fees) the debt was often compounded, pushing the prisoner even deeper into the red. <\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><strong><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"1\">.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><font face=\"Book Antiqua\" size=\"4\"><font face=\"tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif\">Fact:<\/font> Charles Dickens&#8217; father served three months in debtors prison in 1824 for a small fee he owed to a baker.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><strong><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"1\">.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><font face=\"Book Antiqua\" size=\"4\"><font face=\"tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif\">Fact:<\/font> When the &quot;Fleet Prison&quot; was closed by an act of Parliament in the mid 1800s, some prisoners&nbsp;were found to have been locked up for three decades for their debts.&nbsp;<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><strong><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"1\">.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><font face=\"Book Antiqua\" size=\"4\"><font size=\"5\">In the United States,<\/font> debtors prisons remained in existence until 1833. In some states, imprisonment could result from as little as sixty cents worth of unpaid debt.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><strong><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"1\">.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><font face=\"tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"4\">Fact: <font face=\"book antiqua,palatino\">Notable Americans who served time in debtors prison: James Wilson and Robert Morris, both signers of the Declaration of Independence.<\/font><\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><strong><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"1\">.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><strong><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"1\">.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"312\" width=\"312\" src=\"http:\/\/imba.nccu.edu.tw\/curriculum\/graphics\/asia.jpg\" id=\"il_fi\" style=\"padding-bottom: 8px; width: 188px; padding-right: 8px; height: 176px; padding-top: 8px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><font face=\"Book Antiqua\" size=\"5\">Financial responsibility <font size=\"4\">is a hallmark of our economic system.
