Positioning Yourself As An Expert…

This blog is targeted at all the folks out there who "know" what they’re doing in their given profession, or field.

You may be very knowledgable about your business. But you need to share what you know with others and benefit them in such a powerful way, that you will be unforgettable in their eyes. 

The way you do this is by providing unsolicited information that offers great content to your audience and teaches them something that will be useful to them on an ongoing basis.

There’s an old saying you may have heard. "If you give a man a fish you can feed him for a day. But if you teach him how to fish… you can feed him for a lifetime!"

The value of information is sometimes priceless. And your audience of people that are interested in what you have to sell or offer, are looking for ways to improve their lives or businesses through the information you will be providing them.

If they get the impression at any time that you are more interested in helping yourself than helping them, they’ll leave you in a moment! Faster than you can say – "Rabbi of Response" or "My Marketing Maven!"

So make sure that your content is "loaded" with very valuable information & don’t hold back! Because your years of experience are going to save them much valuable time & effort, and will automatically establish you as an expert in your given field.

Once people are comfortable with the knowledge that you are a person they can rely on, you will start receiving phone calls & requests for your products or services! Because people are always looking for solutions, but want to work with someone they can trust, who won’t let them down.

Don’t be afraid to offfer your professional services for free either, if it’s something that won’t tie up too much of your time. On the other hand, you may donate your professioanl services to your local shul, synagogue, or favorite non profit organization, in exchange for being publicly appreciated by the administration of whoever you’re helping.

That will help put the spotlight on you and help position you as an expert, all the more quickly!

A Fundamental Lesson In Selling!

People who do not really understand how selling works, will often feel the necessity to lay high pressure sales tactics to close a sale. Some people even feel quite helpless when a potential customer has a seemingly plausible argument why they can not buy.

Like money.

Get that out of your head immediately, and stop thinking like that! Good sales people know that money is never the issue.

The real issue of ANY sale is always-  "have you offered your buyer enough value?"

You see, when a buyer says to you "I’m not buying", what they’re really saying is, "there’s NO WAY I’m going to give you SO MUCH money for so litle value!"

In the eyes of the buyer, there is no solid justification to part with so much money to receive so little value! And as far as the buyer is concerned, he or she, is absolutely right!

That’s where the job of a good salesperson comes in to play. 

A good salesperson has purchased and uses their product regularly. They’ve made a list of all the "benefits" their customer will derive when they use their product too.

Then they talk mainly about these benefits to build value in their product. So that when they ask for money, in the eyes of the buyer there is so much value for so little money, that the buyer must say "yes".

I love watching the pitchmen at local flea markets. Some of these guys are so good at what they do, I stand in awe, as I watch art taking place right before my very eyes.

You know what I’m talking about.

How To Get The Most BANG For Your Buck With Business Cards…

This week’s email from JobShuk posed an interesting question regarding business cards.

The question was, "how to use them as an effective means of advertising?"

I emailed Zvi, and he suggested I share my thoughts by posting a blog. 

So… here goes!

You have to think creative if you want this to work. A possible suggestion would be, to go to your local printer and have a special die cut made of what would appear to be several 200 shekel bills, or $100 bills, folded in half and slightly fanned out to give the appearance of several bills. This has to look real if you want your advertisement to be the talk the town.

Inside, you could write, "Call Me To Find Out How I Can Make Money For You!" Or something along those lines. Naturally you’d provide your email address and website as well as other relevant contact information.

The thing is that if it looks really cool, I promise you people will not only ‘not throw it away’ but it would seem likely that people would actually "request"  of you to give them your business card, so that they can use it as a gag on their friends.

Be sure to make it identical in size to real bills. You might want to consult with a good graphic artist here on JobShuk to help you with the design.

Having it specially cut is also important to get the desired effect.

You should also include a response mechanism within your business card that would say something like this:

"Present this card by _____________ to receive a valuable 25% discount!"

And you’d  fill in the date by hand prior to giving them out.

The point is, you need to think creatively, to create something no one would want to throw away so quickly!

The printing on this particular example has to be outstanding to really fool the eye at first glance to appear as if the holder is holding several folded bills.

Do This To Successfully Compete in Israel (and the World)…

Let’s face it. Today running a business is really tough. It’s not like the good old days.

In the good old days, you could make a lot of mistakes, and still get away with it. With the advent of technology & the internet at the palm of your hands, the playing ground today for businesses small & large, has drastically changed.

Today if you’re not delivering customer satisfaction on a regular basis, you’re going to be focused on "finding" new clients daily.

But if you’re smarter than the average bear, you"ll probably spend a whole lot less on advertising, and reallocate your resources & energies towards customer satisfaction, and customer care.

Most of the things you need to do, can be done by simply changing the approach your company takes right now.

A good example of this, is an online company that started out by selling shoes. Today they’ve expanded and diversified what they offer.

The company I’m referring to, is a company called Zappos. This company does over 1 Billion dollars in sales annually. The name of their CEO is a guy called Tony.

Sounds real Italian, right? Well Tony is actually Asian. And a very unique human being, as well.

Listening to him talk, at an underground marketing seminar, was truly refreshing! He wasn’t afraid to share information. And even gave out his contact information to anyone who wanted to contact him.

He explained in great detail how his company runs an online shoe store profitably and how they maintain a no nonsense return policy.

The store pays for the shipping both ways if a cutomer needs to return an order. And the delivery is superfast! 

Customer satisfaction!

And customers are satisfied! In fact they’re even quite loyal and return regularly. As well as recommend the store emphatically, to friends and family! 

Tony told over a story, that paints a very clear picture as to the type of mindset Zappos maintains and cultivates in their employees.

Someone mistakenly called Zappos customer service thinking it was a Pizza store. The operator apologized and explained that this was an online shoe store. Apparently, from the dialogue, the operator  understood the location of the caller. The call ended. And a few minutes later the customer service representative called back the caller.

She had located a Pizza store and their number in the callers neighborhood. The caller was utterly overwhelmed and amazed by this unusual display of caring. 

I’m not recommending that you call up Zappos and order pizza. But this was not something that was rehearsed. 

I mentioned it, because it reflects a very needed mindset that’s missing in many businesses today.

It starts with you. You are the head of your company. And when you behave nicely to people, without any expectation to get anything back in return, your neshama shines forth! Everyone from your employees to your customers is affected by this mindset.

I must say, that if you live in Israel and apply this mindset to your company, you will have almost zero competition. And you will be visited regularly by loyal returning customers, who will more than gladly recommend you and your company, to their most dearest & closest friends.

The reason is quite simple. When their friends are exposed to the outstanding service they’re already used to, their friends will be thankful to them for having introduced them to such a wonderful company!

Remember, it starts with you! The way you behave through example with your employees, are the mental tools your employees have to better apply the mindset you want them to adopt.

Distinguish Your Business, So That It Stands In a Class All By Itself!

The way you distinguish yourself, from other businesses in your industry that provide the same services as your business does, will establish your main selling point that you can use to sell your product or service.

If you’re the same as everyone else in your industry, what reason do I have to buy from you? I can buy from anyone else!

So establishing the differences in your customer’s mind’s, that sets you apart and provides benefit to your clients, will provide them with the reasons why they should buy from you, instead of anyone else.

I know a mechanic in Israel, unlike any other mechanic I’ve met here so far. This mechanic has a garage like every other mechanic. But what’s unusual about him is, that he’s impecably honest. Here’s a story that illustrates this point quite well.

While my car was on the lift being taken care of, I stood nearby and watched a customer who needed to have a simple bulb installed in the rear of his car.

The bulb seemed impossible to replace, because the design was very cleverly disguised, to conceal the method of accessing the bulb.

My mechanic’s employee figured out how to access this tricky bulb in under five minutes. Needless to say, all of us were truly amazed at the expertise displayedby this employee.

Then, the customer said that he had been to several service stations and the mechanics there, couldn’t figure out how to access this silly little bulb, to simply replace it. He said they spent quite a bit of time and in the end they simply gave up.

He was expecting to get billed up to about 150 shekel. Maybe even 200. He even commented, "so how much do I owe you? 100 shekel? 150?"

All of us were floored when we heard how much the mechanic charged him! I mean the expressions on all of our faces was clearly that of utter amazement and genuine astonishment!

We all knew how specialized this knowledge was. None of us could figure out how to reach the housing for that stupid little lite. And this mechanic demonstrated genuine professional expertise by figuring out what no one else could figure out, in about five minutes. Even I was expecting to hear him say at least 100 shekel.

But that’s not the price the customer was quoted.

Not 100 shekel. Not even 80 shekel. Not even 50. Or 30, or 20.

The price he quoted this client, was 10 shekels!

I’m not kidding! The impact that action had upon me and everyone else who stood there and witnessed it, is literally unforgettable!

Very rarely does one witness such integrity and honesty. The mechanic said humbly, "It took me only a few minutes. Just pay me for the cost of the bulb."

Needless to say, the client more than gladly paid his ten shekel with a big smile. And the next thing that came out of his mouth was that "you got yourself a customer for life!"

My friend the mechanic, trained his employees to be impeccably honest. Because aside from this being the right thing to do, in an industry that has no shortage of swindling and theiving mechanics who take advantage of unsuspecting customers whenever the customer isn’t looking, being honest is a very distinguishing sales point & major benefit people with cars wish they’d find in their mechanic.

What you do differently in your industry that will create a "WOW" sensation (similar to the sensation I experienced when I heard the employee quote his price), will distinguish you and your service or product from everyone else, and place you in a league all by yourself.

Similarly, by establishing your services to be targeted towards a speciific target group of users, something that your industry has overlooked or simply doesn’t do, will enable you to clearly differentiate yourself in the eyes of your target market.

Consequently, they will seek out your services to solve their problem, since no one else can offer them what only you can.
