I chose green for the walls to blend with the wood of the large breakfront, contrasting the reds of the fabrics. The black of the piano and coffee table adds drama and individuality. Working around an air conditioner fixed on the wall didn’t make my job easier, but this is my specialty, working with people who want to decorate without going through the roof on expenses. The large picture above draws the eye away from the air conditioner, as well as balancing it. Most of the artworkon the walls is by the lady of the house.      I was brought in for damage control, after the apartment had been renovated, to find a solution for this small addition. The ceiling had been made too low, there were no windows and it was far from any windows, so this tiny sitting room needed something to give the effect of light and space. This is a good example of why one should call in an interior designer before renovating.     The breakfront was moved out to a larger space where it would not dominate. I painted a cool aqua wash to give a sense of light and open space, heightening the walls with vertical gold stripes. The small elaborately framed painting just fits.    A round space off an upstairs hallway is put to use as a computer corner. I hung jean curtains to keep direct light from interfering with viewing the monitor. The desk I designed with an ergonomic curve and painted a cool gray, matching the simple metal chair on rollers. I chose neutral beige for the walls.     A bright lively orange sets off the varied treasures accumulated by the owner of this apartment in Beit Shemesh. In this corner an antique kneading trough does service as a side table by the modern black leather and chrome couch. The fine ink drawing in a black mat and silver frame echoes the couch, the elaborate silver candlesticks repeat the eclectic statement of the room.    A plain white kitchen is countryfied with just a few simple touches. I put old fashioned metal handles on the cupboards and painted the walls a fresh light green. Ceramics, wicker and charming jars add color and style on the countertop and shelves.     A new kitchen needing a little something extra…I painted a delicate old rose wash on the walls and a stencil of a grapevine with blue grapes for contrast to the cherry wood cabinetry. I cut my own stencils, each an original.    I designed this succah inspired by the view of the sea off the small balcony of this Tel Aviv apartment, using cerulean blue, white and a sandy beige. The balcony has a low wall around it, with glass sections mounted above the wall for protective height which does not block the view. The succah panels I designed fit between the wall and the glass panels, giving a unity of surface where the subtle horizontal of the glass panels balances the repeated verticals of the succah panels and curtains.  The white airy fabric of the curtains in the succah gently filter the strong Tel Aviv sunlight. Using local products is an important part of conservation as well, avoiding imported products with a higher carbon footprint.
