    Rebecca,

I have about 800 Twitter followers…considered pretty pathetic by Twitter standards.

99% are pornographers, spammers, call-girls and drug dealers.

That leaves about 20 followers. Of those, perhaps 10 are friends 🙂

    Rochelle,

Just saw another wunderkind with 450,000 Twitter followers. I checked his list of followers…a vast majority have names like “sex4sale” and “mortgages4U!”

It’s all pretty silly if you aske me, but if it helps their egos who am I to say!

    Braden,

I’m not sure how I feel about breaking the “Hitler Boycott” but thank you for your thoughts.

    Jackie,

You are right, it is a numbers game and people do equate their worth with it.

The game has become a source of pride, bragging rights and so-called marketability.

I dare any of these social media gurus to whittle down their lists by removing the spammers, pornographers and online-gambling sites and see what they have left.

I’m sure with many, that 25,000 might look a lot more like 1,000 after that painful step!

    Ronika,

Thanks for popping in for a read!

I’ve stopped being impressed by Twitter numbers, as you say, there is so little to be impressed with.

It’s like in real life…I’d rather have 5 good friends than 500 acquaintences. it’s the close relationships that mean the most.

As always, your readership and feedback are much appreciated!

    Shep,

    Ashton Kutcher.

    Brittney Spears.

Maybe they have a million friends but they are the exception rather than the rule!

    Guru,

Thanks. Most important as far as I’m concerned is a smile and/or a laugh. The business lesson comes in a distant second!

    Peter,

    You are indeed correct.

Some digital friends can truly be digital friends and the relationship can be sincere.

The converse is following 50,000 people and having 100,000 followers. It’s just a big game that for the life of me I can’t understand. Nobody can know that many people.

It has just become a strategy to follow hordes of others so hordes will follow back.

Thanks for reading and weighing in…much appreciated!

    Susan,

    Thanks!

You are right about wasting time, but with the new auto-follow options, maybe it’s becoming less so.

Now it’s just if you follow me, I’ll follow you back.

I read a post yesterday about a guy who spent time and effort building a Twitter list of 250,000 followers. I looked through his followers list. Sure he has some big names…among the prostitutes, gambling sites, spammers, etc…

    For what?

    Ben,

I also noted, as you said, about business articles on JBlog. The response articles to the Hitler video did very well, but now when the articles are back to business…a very low rating. It is obviously a forum meant more for Israeli-themed and Jewish blogs. Business-related things don’t tend to garner much interest or many votes.

    Hamed,

No doubt it is useful when you have a pool of 50,000 or 250,000 potential re-tweeters for your posts. But most are strangers and would you want “Bunny69” or “Steroids2011” re-tweeting your posts? And when you are following 100,000 people in return, then what?

I just don’t know. I’ll stick to my 800 or so followers anyday…even though most of them are spammers, porn-freaks, etc.
