Business History: “The Radium Dial Girls”: A Lesson In Work-Place Safety and Ethics

Business History: "The Radium Dial Girls": A Lesson In Work-Place Safety and Ethics

.

It was, and remains, one of the most tragic episodes in modern American business history. Tragic? Yes. Because it was so preventable and avoidable. The danger. The risks. The lies. The cover-ups. The cancer. The vomiting. The agony. The suffering. The wasting away. And the deaths on a grand scale.

.

.

Don’t Worry: It’s

.

The Radium Dial Girls were a group of all female factory workers employed by the United States Radium Factory in Orange, New Jersey, in the first decades of the 20th Century.

With the discovery and isolation of the radioactive element Radium by Marie Curie, one specific property of the substance soon became apparent…and marketable. Radium was luminescent. It glowed in the dark. United States Radium soon contracted with watch-makers, particularly in the military, to make glow-in-the-dark watch dials. The company tasked the factory girls with applying the paint-like, liquid radium to the dials.

Perhaps what is most interesting is that the company owners and scientists, familiar with the harmful effects of radium, avoided contact and exposure with the substance at all cost. During the times when they were forced to work with it, they wore protective apparel and worked behind lead screens…they had a secret to guard: they had documented, scientific proof of the "injurious effects" of radium…

…the factory girls were given no such protection. Furthermore, they were told that the substance they were working with was 100% safe!

.

.

So, without any worry or concern, they painted the dials. And when it was seen that the brush heads lost their shape after a number of strokes, thus affecting the fineness of the numbers, the girls were ordered by supervisors to lick the paint brush tips in between dips in the containers of radium. And…

…having been told there was absolutely no risk whatsoever, the girls frequently painted their fingernails and teeth with the radium, applied it to their skin, turned off the lights and enjoyed the spectacle of seeing themselves and their friends glow in the dark!

This scenario would, unfortunately, play itself out on an even larger scale as several additional factories opened in the United States and Canada. They would eventually employ almost 5,000 workers.

.

.

.

The After-Effects:

.

One-half of a micro-Curie is now known to be the highest level of exposure deemed safe. The Radium Dial Girls had each ingested thousands and thousands of micro-Curies.

The women, one-by-one began to lose their hair, their teeth, contract anemia, necrosis of the jaw and fall critically ill. By the early 1930s, sadly, the last of the girls would be dead.

While they were still alive, a number of the girls took legal action against the company. The company falsified data, bought off doctors and researchers and withheld crucial information. They even engaged in a smear-campaign, attributing the womens’ illnesses to syphilis which it claimed they contracted as a result of their "loose behavior."

The case was finally settled in 1928; Along with her death-sentence, each girl received a paltry sum of $10,000.

If anything good did come out of this episode, it was the fact that it served as the precedent for workers obtaining the right to sue companies for damages sustained as a direct result of labor abuse. It’s a shame it took the deaths of thousands of Radium Dial Girls to bring about the changes.

.

.

Implications in Today’s Business World:

.

As members of the small business community, whether employers or employees, there are implications. Sure, it is unlikely that we work with radioactive or deadly substances, or toxic chemicals, though it is possible.

Whatever the work-place, however, it is important that a safe environment exists. It is critical that every step necessary is taken to ensure that a work-site is free from danger, harmful aspects and that employers and employees alike are allowed to thrive with no concern or worry for their safety or health. It is about trust!

It is equally important that all parties involved are familiar with their legal rights, protection under labor laws and obligations!

5 Business Blogging Principles from 5 Legends of Rock ‘n Roll!

5 Business Blogging Principles from 5 Legends of

.

I always say that if you are looking for great ideas, inspiration and enlightenment, for any reason whatsoever, in the case of the present article…for business, look to music. Music can represent a myriad of things: beauty, culture, message, tradition, relaxation, edginess, wisdom, thought, escape and much more. And it is a common denominator. It crosses cultures it crosses generations, it transcends politics and it unites us. It can be brash, it can be loud, or it can be soft, mellow and poetic. I have chosen five very different songs from the genre of Rock ‘n Roll from which I believe it possible to glean some very useful and important business blogging principles. They are among my favorite songs. I hope you enjoy!

.

.

.

Judas Priest: "Breaking the Law"

.

Okay, when it comes to this Heavy Metal classic from Rob Halford and the band, I’m not talking about knocking off a liquor store or stealing old ladies’ purses. I’m talking about breaking the blogging laws!

Throw the rules out the window! Dare to be different. Push boundaries. Shun conservatism. There are millions of business blogs and bloggers out there. How are you going to set yours apart? I hate this expression more than words can say, but you’re going to have to "think outside the box." Be CREATIVE! Do things that have not been done before. And if you’re doing things that have been done before, make great changes and present them in a whole new light and perspective! Yup, break the law and break the rules!

.

.

.

The Doors: "Light My Fire"

.

Yup, having a successful business blog is not necessarily about having one-off readers. It’s about building a loyal following. It’s about getting regular readers who stop by on a regular basis. And to do that, you’re going to have to do as legendary singer Jim Morisson espoused and light peoples’ fires! How? Passion. Creativity. Energy. Enthusiasm. Knowledge. Uniqueness. Provoke thought! Encourage discourse! And offer your readers the most important thing of all in the business world: VALUE! Give them reason to take time from their busy schedules to stop by again and again!

.

.

.

Wilson Pickett: "In the Midnight Hour"

And "In the Midnight Hour" is where you find me right now. Yes, work is done for the day and it’s time to blog. So let’s turn to some R&B for this principle. Creating and maintaining a successful business blog takes a lot of time and hard work. Posting even two times a week can mean 3-6 hours of "overtime" work. A successful business blog demands regularity. It demands consistency! Keep in mind that the average business blog ends after only one month. It’s about "burning the midnight oil" so to speak. Getting that post out when you want to go to sleep. But that extra time thinking, writing, proofreading and editing? Think of it as an investment. A business blog is truly, as I have found out, the greatest tool out there for a 21st century businessperson!

.

.

.

Peter Frampton: "Show Me the Way"

.

One of the greatest things you can offer business blog readers is tips and advice. Yup, it’s about "showing people the way." Passing out relevant and useful tips, advice and principles demonstrates your knowledge, professionalism and acumen and helps to establish your credibility. It’s about building a name and reputation for yourself among the business public. Think hard and come up with great things you can offer to show people the way. But be careful: don’t give them all of the secrets. By doing so you will create for them a "do-it-yourself-manual" and negate the need for them to turn to you as paying customers and clients!

.

.

.

Bachman Turner Overdrive (BTO): "Takin’ Care of Business"

.

Never ever forget the main purpose of a business blog: to SELL yourself! We’re not talking about a regular blog here where you tell readers about your month-long trek in the Andes. Nor are you offering your best recipe for lasagna. This is a business blog and you MUST sell yourself. What does that mean? It means somewhere in the blog, preferably at the end, offer a SALES-PITCH! In it, tell readers who you are. Let them know what you do and what services and products you have to offer. Put a photo of yourself to personalize it. Give links to your website, portfolio and testimonials. Don’t just present your readers with the option to leave at the end of the article and check out the weather forecast…invite them to stick around and find out more about YOU!

That’s the "sell." But keep something important in mind…and this is a "Biggie"…keep the sales pitch "tame" and format it as an addition to the article. Too much pitch and not enough blog turns the post into an advertisement and blog readers will not find that to their liking!

.

.

.

Dear Reader, I hope you have found this article to be useful. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and stay tuned for Part II…coming soon!

The Pitfalls of Social Media: Why Something So Good for Business Can Suck So Bad!

.

The Pitfalls of Social Media: Why Something So Good for Business Can Suck So Bad!

.

Social Media. Social Media. Social Media. It’s everywhere.

It’s great for business, of that I have no doubt whatsoever. Since I jumped on "the bandwagon" rather belatedly, my business has taken off like a rocket. My blog views have increased by nearly 80% and I’m turning away clients. I’ve also made some GREAT friendships, business connections and contacts via Social Media, probably the type of people I would have become friends with had I met them off-line.

But is there a downside to Social Media, this 21st Century Revolution, perhaps the biggest and best thing for business since the Industrial Revolution or the assembly-line?

.

.

My "Frank" Answer:

.

After almost a year on Social Media, I have found that it is a microcosm of society itself. There is good and there is bad.

At times this great, wonderful thing can seem incredible. The pluses can seem so apparent and the minuses non-existent. Then reality can set in.

There are cliques. There are "old-boys networks." There are syndicates, unions and posses. There are grudges. There is rancor and antipathy. There is animosity. "Clubs" are formed whereby you are either in or out. Support is sometimes given based not on what you do, but rather by who you are. The Janet Jackson song, "What have You Done for Me Lately" can have whole new meaning!

At times this 21st Century Wunderkind of an invention can seem more like a frat or sorority-house and high-school than a professional venue for networking.

.

At times there’s the same back-stabbing, gossip, plotting and cliques.

.

The "right" behavior (being cordial, supportive, present and giving; ass-kissing at other times) can make your star rise like "The Dickens." The wrong word, the wrong phrase and the wrong writing can get you excluded, banished or ex-communicated from "the in-crowd" faster than the Japanese Bullet-Train takes to get from Tokyo to Yokohama Station.

Someone "re-Tweeted" for you. Better do it back. Now! Someone voted for you. Better do it back. Better keep voters happy or lose votes. Someone wants to network with you? Better not stand them up…there might be hell to pay. Someone you never spoke with in high-school wants to be your friend or business partner…ask yourself "why?"

Succeed in the business aspect of Social Media, but don’t let others see you succeed too much. Success can raise ire, make you enemies and create jealousy and resentment.

Social Media is a society. And within the society are communities. It’s about finding a place for yourself. But just like in your own off-line community and society, keep in mind: you have great friends, you have buddies, you have supporters, you have people who will cross the street so as not to have to talk to you and you have those few who would shoot you through the heart with a .38 for the $5 in your wallet!

.

.

.

True Friends, Acquaintances or Just "Virtual People?"

.

Yup, as I said at the outset, Social Media is a microcosm of society. Wars and battles are held off-line. They can just as readily be held on-line. Workplace politics get you down? There’s no shortage here. The same for alliances and affiliations.

I always laugh when someone says they have 10,000 "friends" on Twitter. "So," I always want to ask: "If your car broke down on an abandoned highway at 3 in the morning, how many of those "friends" would come and pick you up?" Just like on the TV series Friends, separate Joey, Chandler, Ross, Phoebe, Rachel and Monica from "biztycoon99" and "rags2riches."

Am I saying don’t use Social Media? No! That would be business-suicide! But tread lightly. Recognize who your friends are. Just as in life, separate the "real" ones from the rest. And realize that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

One glaring omission you might have noticed in this article is the time involved in using Social Media for business. That I have no issue with…think of that as an investment in your business future. All I am addressing here is the social part of social media.

Just be careful what the actions and reactions are! And get ready to check "idealism" at the front door from time to time…

Stay tuned for my next post…"Selling Your Soul To the Devil to Thrive on Social Media!"

Yonatan designed a beautiful new corporate bio for me. I’ve broken through my company’s "glass ceiling," I’ve gotten that long overdue raise and the urge to smoke disappeared overnight!

Hello Yoni, goodbye cigarettes. You’re the best! –Sharon, San Diego, CA

I’ve suffered from clinical depression for years. The world seemed bleak, gloomy and unforgiving. Yonatan edited my manuscript and publishers started a bidding war. My book, "Paranoia, Delusions and Low Self-Esteem: My Story" is coming out in November and my depression’s gone!

Hello Yonatan and goodbye Zoloft! I highly recommend Yoni although my hundred-dollar-an-hour shrink is pissed as "The Dickens"! –"Happy Again", Oslo, Norway

Okay, you’ve figured it out! This is tongue-in-cheek. It’s a playful piece. No weight loss, no quitting smoking, and I couldn’t fix my own car if the fate of mankind depended on it!

.

But there is some truth to this piece.

.

Being a businessperson, whether entrepreneur, freelancer, salesperson or tele-marketer is about SELLING and MARKETING You and Your Products!

.

It’s about finding every conceivable benefit, advantage and value which you can provide for your prospective clients and customers.

.

And it is about spelling them out in black and white for all to see!

.

Don’t make people guess what wonderful things you have to offer. Don’t be vague. Don’t be equivocal. And for Heaven’s sake, don’t be shy!

.

Present yourself comprehensively, completely and clearly!

.

SELL YOURSELF!

.

And solicit the help of satisfied clients and customers to get the word out about you!!!

5 Lessons in Business Success from the Master of Improvisation Himself: MacGyver! (Business Article & Video)

.

For anyone who grew up in America in the 1980s and 1990s, or anyone living in one of the over 70 countries where the classic, multi Emmy Award winning television series appeared in either first-run production or syndication, one legendary and iconic name remains synonymous with overcoming adversity and succeeding through improvisation and wit: MacGyver!

.

The plot of every episode goes something like this: Macgyver, played by Richard Dean Anderson, is sent by the fictional Phoenix Foundation to carry out a secret mission in enemy territory. The mission usually involves rescuing somebody held captive together with stopping madmen intent on mass-destruction. Terrorists, dictators, drug-lords, maniacal, rogue arms-dealers, Soviets (remember, we’re talking Cold-War era here). And…MacGyver, or a protagonist good-guy, midway through each episode, becomes a hostage or finds him or herself trapped in an un-winnable, inescapable situation. All hope seems lost.

.

But, just when MacGyver’s obituary is on the verge of being written, through ingenuity, shrewdness, cunning, gumption, dexterity, wit, an amazing dose of improvisation and through the ingenious use of the limited resources and simple tools at his disposal, MacGyver manages to extricate himself from the doomful, bleak situation and win the day!

.

Yup, it’s all the stuff which had an entire country joking around saying stuff like "I have a piece of gum, a spool of thread, an empty Coke bottle and a paper clip. I think I’ll make an atomic bomb!" It is what made the show a hit, endearing to the viewing public and made MacGyver a pop-culture icon, catch-phrase and cliche for ingenuity and the human-spirit!

.

Perhaps never before in the annals of human endeavor (real or fictional) has one cheesy, quirky and nerdy businessperson accomplished so much with so little!

.

A Few "MacGyver-Isms":

.

The following MacGyver clips are courtesy of the CBS Television Network. In each, Macgyver demonstrates his legendary cunning, prowess and ingenuity. Each is preceded by a short advertisement…my apologies!

.

Season 1, "The Pilot": MacGyver is sent to rescue a group of scientists trapped in a top-secret New Mexico weapons facility. MacGyver uses a chocolate bar to stop a leak of sulfuric-acid. He is well aware that when sugar mixes with sulfuric-acid, it forms a sticky, gum-like paste. He then uses the remaining resin, sodium from a cold-pill and water to create a bomb which blows a hole in the wall and frees the good guys.

.

Season 2, "The Ugly Duckling": MacGyver finds himself assisting a young, naive computer hacker who has gotten herself mixed up with black-market arms dealers. Having freed the girl, he must stop the villains who are now ready to launch a deadly missile; the countdown is on! All Macgyver has to work with are parts of an old Jeep, foliage and the sun:

Business Lessons Abound:

.

So what can we as modern-day businesspeople learn from MacGyver? Plenty I believe! We may never need to face down megalomaniacal, hell-bent, third-world dictators. But in our everyday business travails, I believe there are relevant and applicable principles we can borrow which can help us on the path to success:

.

 1) Never Forget the Tools at Your Disposal! MacGyver never went anywhere without his trusted Swiss Army pocket-knife. It is an instrument with an amazing assortment of useful tools. Remember the tools that you carry: your education, your training, your experience, your acumen, your imagination, your ideas and your wit. They are tools which are there for the using!

.

 2) Never Underestimate the Power of Ingenuity! The human mind is the greatest resource we have available to succeed in business. Concentration, perseverance and adversity are the well-springs and catalysts for all great ideas! Every problem has a solution…it’s just a matter of finding it.

.

 3) Remember Einstein and His Famous Quote: "Imagination is more important than knowledge." Knowledge is a critical component of success, but having imagination allows a person to surpass the bounds and limitations of the ordinary and become extraordinary!

I’m sure that MacGyver was also a believer in Robert F. Kennedy’s famous quote "Some people see things as they are and ask ‘Why?’ I see things that never were and ask ‘Why not?’"

.

 4) Limited Resources Do Not Need to Spell Defeat! In the world of small-business, we often find ourselves working with limited resources and limited funds. "Bootstrapping" is a term often applied to businesses which start on limited budgets and with no external sources of assistance. It requires ingenuity, resourcefulness and wise investment and expenditures. It means being frugal and finding inexpensive sources of operation, advertising and marketing. Consider it "The MacGyver Way!"

.

 5) Keep a Cool Head and Think "On the Fly": Macgyver always got into situations which he never could have imagined at the outset. His reaction? He never panicked. He always kept a straight, cool head. And he always developed an effective "Plan B." It’s about discovering resourcefulness in the face of tribulation and solutions in the face of obstacles, roadblocks and problems.

.

.

The next time you get yourself into a seemingly un-winnable, untenable business situation, ask yourself:

“With This Ring I Thee Wed”: 10 Ways to Keep a Business Relationship Blissful, Satisfying and Out of Divorce Court!

.

.

Bad marriages end up in frustration, acrimony, indignation and animosity, and in the most extreme cases, hatred and divorce court. Are you confronted with a divorce? Then reach out to Rochester divorce lawyers to guide you through the divorce process. Alternatively, you could click here to get hold of the best divorce lawyers for your service.

.

.

.

Unsuccessful business relationships fare no better. The result can be anger, resentment, cynicism, irritation, malice, quitting, termination and/or a client who chooses not to return to us with future projects.

.

.

As… yet another of my and my lovely wife Rivkah’s wedding anniversaries approaches, I got to thinking recently about what constitutes a good BUSINESS relationship or partnership.

What keeps us happy? What keeps our clients and customers happy? What brings satisfaction or dissatisfaction? What evokes feelings of frustration? What are the factors which influence whether a client will be a return-customer or whether at some future time he or she will decide to take their business elsewhere? Will it be a business match “Made in Heaven” with a satisfied client referring and recommending you to others? Or not!

.

As I contemplated these issues more and more deeply, the answer I came up with is that a successful business partnership and the maintaining of good relationships with a client is not that much different than the relationship between a married couple.

.

Both need the existence of specific factors in order to assure that the participants will remain smiling, satisfied, and that the relationship will stand the test of time.

.

.

  1)    Both are based on open lines of communication. In the business world, it is essential. Questions arise. Issues need clarification. We as service providers can’t guess what is on the client’s mind, we must be sure! Talk! Clients: tell us what you really want, and be specific. Communication will ensure relationship survival. Lack of communication or miscommunication can spell the end!

.

  2)    In both marriage and the business world, expectations must be spelled out clearly. You love hiking, dogs and boating…she hates the outdoors, animals and is scared to death of water! You want a big family…he’s not so fond of children! Maybe you should have talked about this before marriage! In the business world, not knowing exactly what your client expects can be disastrous. Again, clarify! The downside of not knowing exactly what he or she wants from us, whether in a standard workplace or as freelancers, is having to complete the work all over again if we have missed the mark. When issues of time and money arise, spell it out! When important issues having to do with instructions, procedures or agreements come up, ambiguity can never be a good thing!

  3)   Both a marriage and a business partnership are based upon mutual respect. Be aware of the other person’s strengths, weaknesses, limitations, feelings, emotions, pressures, time-constraints, etc. In the end, we are all human-beings. Respect and understanding are 2-way streets!

.

   4)  Both marriage and business require you to prove you are the one! Dating requires proving that you are the best candidate out there to assume the role of marital partner. You must demonstrate that you have all of the qualities to be a great husband, wife, father, mother and bread-winner. Business is no different. You, as a businessperson, must take all steps necessary to prove that you are the ideal candidate for the position. You must lay on the line your acumen, educational credentials, work-history, talents, past successes, portfolio, recommendations, competitive pricing and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is no one out there more qualified and willing to succeed than you!

.

  5)    Both are based upon proper timing. Are you ready for marriage? Perhaps not yet. You’re young and want to travel, live life, mature, gain stability and traction and get that next degree. Maybe in a few more years. You’ve got your eye on the lovely lady of your dreams? Whoops, she just started seeing someone else! In business, the timing also has to be right. You must learn, polish and perfect your skill-sets. You must attain a level of expertise in your field of endeavor. And the party desiring to hire you must also be ready. Availability, a high level of commitment, the desire to move forward, cooperate and work together toward a common goal and purpose must be present and mutually agreed upon.

.

  6)   Both a marriage and a good business-relationship can hinge on the small things. Just as a spouse might surprise their partner with an unexpected candle-lit dinner, flowers, or a surprise night out, so too are good business relationships based on the small things. Do a bit extra. Go “the extra mile.” Compliment your boss or client on something which impresses you without coming across as being patronizing. Have a dream-client? Invite him or her out to dinner. Finished a project? Send an email after a week or so to ask if the work needs any fine-tuning or if the client has any additional work for you. Make a list of the birth-dates of past clients and send them e-card greetings. Leave doors open and never burn bridges!

.

  7)   Both need the “Three Ds” from both parties: DEDICATION, DETERMINATION and DEPENDABILITY. The opposite can be Disillusionment, Dissatisfaction and Divorce!

.

  8)    Both, as the old saying goes, are like an elevator: “They have their ups and downs.” Both, at times, necessitate reassessment, restructuring, re-evaluation, introspection and thought. Both require the patience and persistence necessary to achieve new heights!

.

  9) Both take commitment and hard work! Life is not always easy, neither is marriage, neither is work. Making any of these ventures end in success takes a great deal of hard work. This work, however, can and MUST be seen as an investment in our collective futures!

.

  10) Both marriage and business require the use of words and thoughts that don’t always come easy. “I’m sorry!” “I screwed up!” “How can I make this better?” “Was it I who was in the wrong?” “How did/does that look from your perspective?” “How could I do that differently next time?” How can I improve myself? How might I need to change? How can I be a better person? How can I put myself in the other person’s shoes? How do things I do, say and ways that I act affect others? The list is endless!

.

..

.

With a little bit of respect, understanding, and mutual consideration, both business relationships and marriages can result in long-term success, happiness, satisfaction and smiles!

.

Several months later, not getting the responses I had hoped for, I sought out the services of a professional photographer. A set of 100 photos cost me $75.

I uploaded two of the new shots onto the site and PRESTO! Within 24 hours, Rivkah wrote to me!

I asked her why she had ignored my initial attempts at contacting her. She laughed then, as we laugh now when re-telling the story to friends…"You looked like an axe-murderer," she stated!

I’m not the handsomest guy out there by a long-shot and still wonder why this marvelous creature said "Yes" when I proposed. All I know is that had I continued with the "goony" DMV photo, I never would have met her! Now Rivkah and I are happily, blissfully married! She loves me and she loves our dog "Halva!"

What Do Your Photos Say About You?

.

I asked a photographer, for the purposes of this article what she sees as necessary in photos used for the purpose of websites and profiles. Her answer:

.

Authoritative. Trustworthy. Natural. Congenial. Friendly. Affable. Aprroachable. Honorable. Smiling. Polite. Open. Serious but not too. Ethical. Dependable. Credible. And valid!

.

Things which shouldn’t be present:

.

Smirking. Staring. Somber. Forlorn. Frozen. Goony. Gloomy. Suspicious. Cagey. Stiff. Inflexible.

.

Photos are hugely important in business! The value of them in attracting customers and clients quite simply can not be understated! They are worth a thousand words. The question is which thousand words you want to convey and which thousand words you are presently conveying.

Taking the time to get the perfect photo which represents you, by yourself, with the help of a friend, or with the assistance of a pro, is worth the time and effort.

.

.

The Generic Silhouette No-No!

.

"I can’t for the life of me understand," stated the photographer when I broached the subject, "why people still insist on using the generic silhouette! I see it on LinkedIn, on O-Desk and all over the place! With everybody having a cellphone camera, why not take a picture? Have a friend take a shot. If you need a professional photographer, it’s dirt cheap!"

It’s true I believe. When people read a blog or are looking for someone to do business with, they are looking for a human being. They are looking for those thousand words! They are looking for a known quantity, and with a generic silhouette, nothing is known.

.

Personally, when I visit a website or a business profile site, I skip over the generics completely. And when I visit a social networking site where people post their blogs or business articles, I skip over every blogger with a generic silhouette avatar!

A business deal can be won or confounded by a good or bad photo. It can be the maker or the breaker. It can stop someone in their tracks before they even consider whether or not to contact you!

What do your photos say about you?

Slice of History: Business Lessons from the INCREDIBLE Saga of Hiroo Onoda, “The Soldier Who Refused to Surrender.”

.

Slice of History: Business Lessons from the INCREDIBLE Saga of Hiroo Onoda, "The Soldier Who Refused to Surrender."

.

This is not the first time I have written a piece on the incredible story of Hiroo Onoda. I have featured him in several short stories I have had published, and he is prominently mentioned in a novel which I will finish one of these years…or decades!

It is only recently that it has crossed my mind to write about this AMAZING figure from history in a business context. The lessons seem so rife, numerous and applicable to the world of business. As such, I present to you, the following original article.

.

.

Disclaimer/Personal Thoughts: The involvement of Imperial Japanese Forces in WWII was an era punctuated by aggression, invasion, enslavement, forced-labor, systematic rape, concentration-camps, fanaticism, summary-executions, torture, unspeakable cruelty and the loss of millions of lives. The episode written about in this article is not meant to ignore, overlook or make light of these facts, rather, it has been written to focus solely on the story of one man, one soldier: Hiroo Onoda. The soldier who fought WWII for almost 30 years!

.

.

"The Soldier Who Refused to Surrender":

.

In December, 1944, twenty-three year-old Hiroo Onoda was dispatched to the Philippine island of Lubang to command the Lubang Garrison of Japan’s Suri Brigade. The last orders given to him by his commanders on their departure were: "It may take three years, it may take five, but whatever happens, we’ll come back for you. Until then, so long as you have one soldier, you are to continue to lead him."

.

Lubang Island, Philippines

.

Allied Forces under the command of U.S. General Douglas MacArthur stormed the island of Lubang in February, 1945, swiftly overrunning Japanese defensive positions. Onada and three other survivors retreated, taking refuge in the dense jungle.

On August 15th, 1945, following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, unbeknown to Hiroo Onoda, Imperial Japan offered unconditional surrender. After seven long years, and with a death toll exceeding 50 million lives, WWII was finally over!

.

WWII Rages On for Hiroo Onoda:

.

Onada and the three men under his command, Corporal Shoichi Shimada, Private Kinshichi Kozuka, and Private Yuichi Akatsu, continued to believe that the war was still raging. They lived off the land eating what they could find and on occasion, sneaking down the mountain to kill a villager’s cow. On one foray, they found a note telling them that the war was over. Onoda dismissed the note as enemy propaganda.

.

 Hiroo Onoda’s 30-Year War:

.

Throughout the next several years, Onoda and his small band of men engaged in their war, carrying out raids and acts of sabotage on "Allied Forces." Unfortunately, the Allied Forces were, in fact, Philippine villagers. And throughout the years, more notes were left, leaflets were dropped by plane and newspapers were left in the jungle proving that WWII had ended. Each time, Onoda dismissed the messages as wiley attempts by the Allies to trick the men.

In 1949, thinking something amiss, Private Yuichi Akatsu snuck away and eventually surrendered. He sent a note back to Onoda announcing that he had been pardoned and was living as a free man. The note was ignored.

In 1954, Corporal Shimada was shot and killed by a Filipino patrol which Onoda mistook for an Allied patrol. To Onoda, the incident was confirmation that WWII raged on and proof of the enemy’s continued deception.

That left only Onoda and Kinshichi Kozuka who fought on, continuing with raids and sabotage. Onoda waited for Japanese forces to return, believing that his persistence and tenacity would be viewed as heroic and highly rewarded.

.

 The Saga’s End:

.

In 1972, the two men were engaged by an armed Filipino patrol; Kozuka was killed in the exchange of gunfire which ensued. News of the killing quickly reached the shocked Japanese public where it was concluded from evidence that Onoda was still alive.

In 1974, acting alone, Norio Suzuki, a Japanese college student, ventured into the Philippine jungle and succeeded in finding Onoda. His attempts to convince Onoda that the war had been over for decades fell on deaf ears. Suzuki departed, telling Onoda that he would return with proof.

Two weeks later the two met at a pre-arranged meeting place. Accompanying Suzuki was Major Taniguchi, Onoda’s one-time commander. Taniguchi read out to the bewildered Onoda the Japanese declaration of surrender from 1945. At this, Onoda emptied his rifle, placed his remaining hand-grenades on the ground and wept uncontrollably.

.

.

After 29 years, his war had come to an end. Onoda proceeded to surrender to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and was subsequently granted a full pardon. Onoda continues to live in Japan.

.

Business Lessons from This Strange Historical Saga:

.

.

Is it possible to glean business lessons from this, one of the strangest sagas in modern history? You bet!

.

Check Mark clip art1) What we sometimes mistake for tenacity, perseverance and steadfastness can, in actuality, be hard-headedness, inflexibility and stubbornness. It is vital to distinguish between these opposites.

Check Mark clip art2) Clarify Instructions, Directions and Orders: In retrospect, Hiroo Onoda followed orders a little bit too well. Clarify orders, instructions and directions in business, and perhaps most importantly…have a back-up plan!

Check Mark clip art3) "No Man Is An Island!" Unfortunately, and due mainly to circumstances, Hiroo Onoda was an island unto himself. In 21st -Century business, remaining isolated, in a vacuum and out of the loop is a strategy for almost certain defeat and failure. It is crucial to network, communicate with others and share in the dissemination of knowledge, wisdom and ideas!

Check Mark clip art4) Don’t Operate On Assumption Alone: All of Hiroo Onoda’s later assumptions were false. In business, the result of false or mistaken assumption is most often missed opportunity, lost time and wasted effort. These assumptions cost Hiroo Onoda to waste thirty years of his life and resulted in numerous civilian casualties! In business, replace assumption with that which you know to be factual and true! .

Check Mark clip art5) Avoid Over-Reliance and Over-Dependence on Others: Hiroo Onoda waited and waited for his reinforcements to arrive. They never appeared. In business, we often place responsibility on others on whom we rely and depend. It is known as delegation. Waiting endlessly for others, and relying on them too heavily can often have negative effects and repercussions. The business-world is the place to personally "take the bull by its horns!"

Check Mark clip art6) Look for Signs and Messages: Look at "The Writing on the Wall!" In Onoda’s case, the signs and messages were there all along. He, rather unfortunately, chose to ignore and dismiss them. In business, we must seek out signs, messages, trends, and examine them. It is critical to sort out those messages and signs which are important and critical from those which have little bearing and weight. We must stay informed. We must read, study and fill ourselves with all of the knowledge which is available in the news, in our professions and in our businesses.

Check Mark clip art7) Use All Tools and Technology At Our Means and Disposal to Keep Abreast of What Is Happening: Had Hiroo Onoda been in possession of an iPad, cell-phone or laptop, his 29-year war might have ended decades earlier. Today, as businesspeople, we have incredible tools at our disposal to remain in touch, up-to-date and in constant contact with those around us. It is technology which provides us with additional means to succeed in our business ventures!

Check Mark clip art8) Have An Open Mind! Check stubbornness at the door! Look at varying ways, means and processes. We might think that we always know best. An open mind and one that is open to suggestion can be a critical tool in evaluating the best way to achieve our goals and desired outcomes!

The ULTIMATE Business Branding and Marketing Tool, Complete with…Roller-Coasters and Souvenir Shop!?!

.

Nothing, I repeat NOTHING, says your business and brand have arrived more than the establishment of your company’s very own AMUSEMENT THEME-PARK!

.

I am the founder, owner and only employee of Executive Penmanship, a one-person, freelance-writing business. With dreams of my business growing into a mega-huge, capitalist-behemoth, international conglomerate of resumes, corporate bios, websites and speech-writing, to name but a few of the services, I am, at this very moment, designing my very own company amusement park!

.

Fortunately, I don’t have to start from scratch. Anyone planning such a venture can model their own amusement park after one in existence for more than a century. Yes, it’s the ultimate advertising and marketing tool from the chocolate purveyor that all the world loves and adores!

.

HersheyPark:

One of the many great things about growing up in Eastern Pennsylvania was HersheyPark, located in Hershey, Pennsylvania! It’s an awesome amusement park with over 60 rides and attractions, nestled on 110 acres of beautiful Keystone State land.

It’s a wonderful place to spend the day, replete with amusement park, Hershey’s Chocolate World, a Visitor Center which contains shops and restaurants, a zoo and the nearby Hershey’s Chocolate Factory, also open to tours.

.

In 1903, Hershey Chocolate Company founder, Milton S. Hershey, began surveying the local area for a site suitable for the fulfillment of his dream…a leisure park for company workers. An area in Spring Creek was chosen. Work on the park began soon thereafter.

On April 24, 1907, the park opened. The entrance sign proudly proclaimed: “Ye who enter here leave dull cares behind.”

.

Several years later, amid great fanfare and wild excitement, the park was opened to the general public. It was an instant-hit!

Today, the park, which attracts 2.4 million visitors annually, is a far cry from anything which the original employees and visitors could possibly have imagined in the early 20th Century. Huge, ultra-modern roller-coasters, giant ferris wheels, carousels, a water park, boardwalk, arcades and themed areas as diverse as Rhineland, Tudor Park, Comet Hollow and an old-style Mining Town.

.

I wonder, were he alive today, if good old Milton Hershey (1857-1945) would be willing to get on the park’s ultimate roller-coaster, Fahrenheit:

.

Yes it’s an Amusement Park, the ULTIMATE symbol that a business has arrived! It’s the incomparable, unsurpassable, preeminent, emphatic marketing tool!

MY Vision & Dream: “Executive-PenmanshipPark”:

.

To the folks at Hershey, I state the following emphatically: Enjoy your fame, notoriety, fanfare and accolades while they last! You will soon have a competitor! Yup, as I mentioned, this starry-eyed writer is currently hard at work choosing a plot of land for his very own theme-park.

.

Opening day is scheduled for July 1, 2015. At that time the public will be able to enjoy such excellent attractions as “The Resume Roller-Coaster,” “Grammar-Land,” “Punctuation Village,” “Manuscript Mountain,” BIC (a giant pen-shaped, 90-meter parachute drop), a Disney-style mono-rail…

.

…there will be restaurants, games, live entertainment and attractions for the entire family! And there will be a gift shop with souveniers, and corporate gift ideas so you can share and remember the joys of your experience for many years to come! All for the incredibly low-priced admission cost of $15!

.

Actually…sorry. I didn’t intend to insult your intelligence Dear Reader as I drifted off in my daydream. I am, after all, a struggling freelance writer on a very tight budget.

I’ll aim for and aspire to a theme-park to market and brand my small business. But for now, my resources are limited. In the meantime, should you stop by for a visit, I’ll give you a tour of my office and backyard, make you a piping-hot cup of coffee, and as a bonus, I’ll let you pet my dog…

.

.

But alas, like all visionaries, my vision of my own theme-park will live on and I will remain stubborn and steadfast…

.

Keep informed folks as work continues toward the realization of one humble writer’s dream!

“LSD”: My Formula for Bringing Unique Creativity to Business Writing!

.

Use "LSD" to Help Your Business Writing:

 .

Okay. There’s a 99.9% chance that you are appalled! And rightfully so!

Let me assure you right off the bat: This is a 100% Drug-Free blog! No mind-altering substances here. The LSD I’m alluding to is not Lysergic acid diethylamide. I can assure you the strongest thing you’ll find around these parts is a cold pint of Guinness, consumed for the dreamy taste and marvelous texture.

.

Creativity: An Explanation:

.

Creativity is, according to the folks at Merriam-Webster:

Pronunciation: ˌkrē-(ˌ)ā-ˈti-və-tē, ˌkrē-ə-

Function: noun

1 : the quality of being creative
2 : the ability to create

Well "Gee Golly Willickers" guys, that wasn’t a very creative definition! Reminds me of one of those third grade tests: "Johnny, will you please use the word creativity in a sentence for the class?" "Yes, Ma’am…’The girl was creative.’" "Wonderful Johnny!!!"

.

Ink Pen clip artMy Definition:

Creativity is the systematic act of racking the heck out of your brain to draw out the wonderful ideas and inspirations which are lodged deep in the recesses of your mind and molding them into a dynamic, fun, thought-provoking thing of beauty!

.

Ink Pen clip artMy Formula for Creativity: LSD:

.

"L"

.

Look at the world around you. All of the ideas you need are right there. Look at nature. Watch your dog playing. Think of lessons you learned as a child. Watch the news. Examine current events. Look at theories and principles. Read a book. Plant a tree and watch it grow. It’s all right there!

Listen to the world around you. Ideas come from music. They come from hearing birds singing and raindrops pattering against the roof. They come from hearing the wisdom of others. Lessons. Lectures. Comedy. Religious teachings. Quotes. Children playing. Thunder. Wind. Waves. When it comes to creativity, your ears are one of the most powerful tools you have!

Live life! Creativity is not rooted in forcing yourself to sit in front of a computer screen! Creativity emenates from life! Hike. Travel. Play. Bowl. Enjoy. And watch the well-spring of ideas flow over! Nobody ever said a business blog needs to be about business only…how boring would that be? Blend business with life!!!

.

"S"

.

Subjectify. Arrive at a subject which you want to base your piece around. In business, it can be anything. Fishing. A great movie. Migrating birds. A game of stickball. Steps towards solving a problem. Principles. Foundations. Anything! Come up with great subject matter and think of how to transform it into a GREAT idea!

Solidify your thoughts. Draw out the important concepts. Remove those that don’t seem relevant. Think of a sculptor who starts with a block of clay. Remove what doesn’t belong and shape what remains.

Start writing! Put pen to paper. Scribble. Doodle. Get all of your thoughts written down! Be on a mission!

.

"D"

.

Dream! Yup…close your eyes. Picture the end product. What do you want it to look like? Where do you want it to be? As a literary writer myself, I’ll tell you an interesting fact: many writers begin with the final chapter! The outcome can be the most intriguing place to start. Crystalize your ideas into the climax!

Dare to be different and take a chance. Creativity is not doing what’s already been done a thousand times. It’s trying something new. It’s experimenting with the unknown. Gamble! The end-product could very well be something which will make others say "WOW!"

Delve into the depths of your mind! Strain. Push like a woman giving birth! (not that I know what that feels like!) Yes, the birth of the unique, creative ideas which will set your work apart from others. Think of what’s been done before…and what hasn’t been done yet. Those ideas which will make your writing stand out from the crowd!

Think of the great quote by Robert F. Kennedy:

"There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why… I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?"

Develop the final product. Pour your heart and soul into it! Don’t hold back! Brainstorm!

Delay. Fight the impulse to submit the work right away. Sit back. Breathe. Take a walk. Listen to a great CD. Go out to dinner with your spouse. Then, and only then, take a second look at the work. And think. Did you miss something? Are you satisfied? Finalize the piece. Proofread. Edit. Dot the "I’s" and cross the "T’s." Make it perfect! Let it represent the ideals of your dream!

and…

.

Deliver!

.

Well folks, that’s it for my first year of business blogging. Now it’s time for a break! As always, thanks for stopping by and I’ll see you in the beginning of August!
